VSS Future Lab - Team 2 - Rethinking Defense in the EU

How might we motivate the European countries to create a European Army that can provide an inclusive, beneficial, equal, and safe environment for the continent?

Michaela, Lukáš, Nicolas, Yuliia, Zuzanna, and Arber tackled this bold and complex question, delving into one of the most debated future-oriented topics in Europe today: the concept of a unified European Army.

Their scenario explored key motivations behind such a development, from strengthening a shared European identity to enhancing strategic autonomy and reducing dependence on NATO. The group highlighted how a joint military force could provide security and symbolize cohesion and trust among EU member states. They also addressed the brutal realities: divergent political interests, institutional inertia, and the bureaucratic hurdles that any collective defense initiative would inevitably face.

With a clear-eyed perspective on potential and the obstacles, this team opened space for real, challenging questions: What would a European Army mean for future EU enlargements? Could it become a tool for unity, or deepen existing divides?

Stay tuned - more final presentations coming soon.
